VISITS (All You Need Including Telephone Numbers)

Go Straight To VISITING TIMES OF ALL PRISONS INCLUDING CONTACT DETAILS

Prison regimes do vary, no two prisons are necessarily running in the same way, each establishment has its own procedures and regulations and these are subject to change - without notice in many instances. We do our utmost to keep astride of such changes but do advise you to telephone the establishment in question and check if you are in doubt about anything before making plans to visit. Please let us know of any changes if you discover them before we do.

With regards,
The team at 'In Custody'.

The staff in the Visitor Centre and inside the Visiting Hall offer a warm welcome, they are very helpful and are there to assist you with advice, information and support. They are making a valuable contribution to the smooth running of the jail and they are the first point of contact for visitors to the prison.

Tell the Booking Clerk if you need WHEELCHAIR access.

Ask the Booking Clerk for OTHER PERMISSIBLE FORMS OF I.D. if you have a problem providing documents listed here >> PERMITTED VISITOR ID items.

Allow as much time as possible for booking your visit, normally booking lines are busy and your call may be put into a queue. All bookings are subject to availability as the prison has only so many seats available so it is on a first come - first served basis. Pay particular attention to the opening times of the Booking Line. The amount of time allotted for the visit varies from prison to prison so read the Visiting Order or ask when booking via telephone or email, the National Minimum Entitlement is 1 HOUR but read the visiting Info below for the prison you're visiting so you know what to expect.
All prisons are NO SMOKING zones. You can smoke outside the prison and Visitor Centres normally provide smoking areas and stub boxes and many have picnic benches so you can sit and smoke outside the building. They do not sell cigarettes at any Visitor Centre that we know of, please let us know if you find one that does!

BOOKING YOUR VISIT

Certain prisons allow bookings to be made via email using a downloaded form which must be printed and handed in on arrival for the visit. Please make sure you fill in the form completely so as to avoid disappointment if the prison refuses the visit based on an incomplete form. You should receive a reply to the emailed form you send within 24 hours. When booking by email you must book atleast 48 hours and up to 2 weeks in advance of the booking. If in doubt, telephone the Prisoners' Advice Service on 0207 253 3323 to check up on these rules which vary across the prison estate.

BOOKING IN PROPERTY

Normally the prisoner must put in an Application (on the wing) to the Governor for permission to have belongings passed into the prison, before you can take items in. Please see our list of permitted Personal Belongings for inmates*.Booking in personal possessions for the inmate in some prisons does eat into the amount of time you spend together on the visit so when passing in property arrive at the prison in good time and aim to be at the front of the queue!

AVAILABILITY OF VISITS

When a prisoner is taken to prison whether on REMAND or CONVICTED he/she is entitled to what is called a RECEPTION VISIT which means anyone (friend or relative) can attend the prison and provided they have the required I.D. documents will be let in. Usually, the Reception Visit must be taken within 7DAYS of the prisoner's arrival at the establishment but we have found some jails allowing for the Reception Visit within only 72 hours so read the Visiting Info below for the relevant prison. Following the Reception Visit, remanded prisoners are entitled to 1 Visit each day for a maximum of 30 minutes or 1 visit per week for 90 minutes. A convicted prisoner may have 2 visits every 28 days. It is always prudent to telephone the prison (in our opinion) and check that you can just turn up for the Reception Visit and ask about passing in property, their procedures for this and whether the prisoner has to do anything in order to receive visitors (such as put in an Application on the wing). After the Reception Visit has been taken the prisoner must send out a Visiting Order for you to be able to visit.

Usually ALL VISITS (SOCIAL/DOMESTIC AND LEGAL/OFFICIAL) must be pre-booked by telephone 24 OR 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE and no more than 14DAYS IN ADVANCE. See below for visiting times for each establishment. Most establishments have a Visitor Centre which has lockers in which you can store items which you cannot take with you into the prison e.g. mobile phones, credit cards, cash over the acceptable amount and personal belongings, your make-up bag for instance.

Visiting Orders have a shelf-life of usually 28 days, it will say this somewhere on the piece of paper itself so read the small print. Visits are treated as a privilege and as such, each prisoner has a right to a certain number of visits after the initial 'reception visit' within 7 days of arrival at a particular jail, in some prisons this limit is less so do check.

There are no restrictions on Legal Visits though although there are restrictions on the number of people accepted into one legal visit.

Normally no visits permitted on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Bank Holidays.

NUMBER OF PEOPLE ALLOWED AND UNDER 18'S

Prisons have their own rules and policies but normally no more than 3 ADULTS plus Children or 3 VISITORS in total so read the Visiting Order or ask when you call the booking line. Under 18's must be accompanied by an adult. Children over 10yrs may be considered an adult for seating purposes so check this out when booking.

TAKING CHILDREN IN WITH YOU

Children are commonly seen in the visiting Halls of prisons and as such the environment is kept as child-friendly as possible with a designated area with toys often provided. Children must be monitored by the parent/guardian/older siblings just as it is in say, a Doctor's waiting room. Children over 10 years old (in some cases it's over 12 years old) may be classed as an adult for seating purposes.

With a small child you may take in the following: PUSHCHAIR OR BABY CARRIER, 1 DUMMY, 2 NAPPIES, 1 BIB, 1 BABYGROW, 1 TRAVEL PACK OF WIPES, 1 FACTORY SEALED BOTTLE OF MILK/JUICE, 1 FACTORY SEALED JAR OF BABY FOOD AND SMALL PLASTIC FEEDING SPOON,

WHAT TO TAKE IN WITH YOU

Apart from Property that you are passing in for a prisoner, a visitor is only allowed to take in a maximum of usually £10 (no notes) in COINS only, check this with staff at the Visitor Centre. You are allowed to take in PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION if necessary during the visit. You may be permitted to take in your locker key if you use one, a house key, a car key aswell. Ask the staff at the Visitor Centre if you are in doubt. Your belongings are placed in the lockers AT YOUR OWN RISK.

PROOF OF IDENTITY

Children will need proof of I.D., this can be PASSPORT, BIRTH CERTIFICATE or BUS PASS. Adults always need either PASSPORT, DRIVER'S LICENCE, CITIZEN CARD OR EMPLOYER'S I.D. These are all accepted without the need for any of the others.

If you do not have any of the above then TWO or more of the following: RAIL/BUS PASSES photo-bearing, CHEQUE BOOK/CREDIT/DEBIT CARD WITH SIGNATURE, YOUNG PERSON'S PROOF OF AGE CARD, TRADE OR STUDENT UNION MEMBERSHIP CARD, UTILITY BILL.

The address shown on the I.D. must match the address on any V.O.

VISITOR CENTRES

Each establishment has a Visitor Centre which is usually a building outside of the prison boundary, or if within the prison gate, will be an independent and secure area in which to hold all visitors. There will be toilets and the provision of refreshments (usually 2 ladies in a kitchen with a hatch) you can buy hot and cold drinks and snacks e.g. sandwiches, cakes and even hot pies. There are toys and books to help keep the children amused and often there is a television too. There will be a Reception Desk which you check in at. You will be required to fill out a form (name, address and relationship to prisoner) you can ask for help filling out the form infact, the prison staff will offer to fill it out for you. You need to produce your I.D. at the Visitor Centre and again inside some prisons. When you are checking in PERSONAL BELONGINGS FOR THE PRISONER bear in mind that they will not be accepted with packaging and they will all be searched/scanned etc.

SEARCHES

In many prisons you will be asked for your signature and will be signing a Declaration to the effect that you will not help anyone to escape, you will not attempt to bring in alcohol or tobacco and that you are aware that it is an offence to be in possession of illegal drugs and that you do not have any. This will be used as evidence supporting prosecution in the event of a seizure of contraband.

You will have to go through a Full Body Scanner and/or have a pat-down search by a Prison Officer. Males over 15 years will be searched by a male Officer. Females are always searched by female Officers and in the presence of atleast 1 other same-sex Officer. You may well be asked to open your mouth for inspection too.

Children are also subject to a pat-down search. Your shoes, belt, jewellery etc. may be put through an X-ray conveyor belt type machine. This process is just like those conducted at an airport. Sometimes dogs are used to detect drugs, if the dog does detect something it is trained to sit down beside the person, not to bark at them - as some people imagine. Please explain this process to children going on a visit so they know what to expect which will reduce any distress.

Random strip-searches of prisoners are often carried out following visits. Passive drug dogs are often present at prisons these days.

GETTING INTO THE PRISON

You must be accompanied by a Prison Officer at all times when you are within the prison. So, after checking in and waiting at the Visitor Centre, you will be called for and taken by a Prison Officer into the prison, usually taken in batches, having been given a number when you arrive at the Visitor Centre and called for in batches of 10 - 20.

THE VISITS ROOM/HALL

This is usually a large area with tables and chairs, usually seating 4 at each table, one of the chairs may be a different colour and the prisoner sits there. Prisoners are not allowed to move around during the visit, they must sit on the chair. The prisoner may have to wear a coloured tabard. Prison Officers are present and watching the prisoners at all times but they usually keep a very low profile so as not to interfere with the prisoner's time spent with friends and relatives. When the visit time is drawing to a close the Officers will move around the area telling you the visit is ending, they do this in a very civil manner.

CONCERNED FOR THE PRISONER?

Most prisons are operating a Safer Prisons Programme. If you think that a prisoner may be at risk (harm from others, harm to others or self-harm) then please telephone the prison and ask to speak to the Duty Governor and report your concerns to him/her. Alternatively ask to speak to somebody in the Safer Prisons Team if the programme is in operation at the jail.

SUPPORT FOR YOU

Become a Member of 'In Custody' and gain access to our FORUM where you can chat, seek support and share your experiences for the benefit of others. When a friend or relative enters custody this can be an alienating experience made worse by not having support to deal with the worry and uncertainty associated with the event. Not knowing where your loved one is and worrying for their wellbeing all go to make the situation harrowing. Gaining the relevant knowledge and knowing your rights at this time does alleviate stress. Feel free to post a question on our Forum if there is something you need to know and cannot find it here.

Since the prison system has an alienating effect on both the prisoners and their family and friends, visits can be highly emotional and upsetting. Entering a prison for the first time can be a stressful and shocking experience if you are not familiar with prison regimes. Prisons are austere places, remember they do not have ornaments and a homely feel, rather there is an institutional feel to the place with the solid metal doors and uniformed officers. Add to this that visits are often a happy time tinged with deep sadness and time is needed in order to come to terms with the experience so bear this in mind and prepare yourself for what is in store.

FINANCIAL AND OTHER ASSISTANCE WITH VISITS

If you are aged 18yrs or over and on a qualifying income you may be able to get help with the cost of travel if you are a CLOSE RELATIVE or partner. A close relative means a WIFE, HUSBAND, DAUGHTER, SON, PARENT, GRANDPARENT, SISTER, BROTHER, CIVIL PARTNER OR A STEP OR ADOPTIVE PARENT, SIBLING OR CHILD.

If you are aged 75yrs and over you can request a helper to escort you on your prison visit. Please contact the Assisted Prison Visits Unit, PO Box 2152, Birmingham, B15 1SD. Tel.0845 300 1423 Mon - Fri 10.15 - 11.45 and 14.15 - 15.45. Email address: assisted.prison.visits@noms.gsi.gov.uk, information packs available on request
